Hello World
A first post
The cliche of the title isn’t lost on me, I just wanted to put out a first post to head up my Substack. Currently, this post is only to be sent to my mother, brother and girlfriend, where they’ll read a bunch of information about me that they already know. So I’ll be brief.
Who am I and what do I want?
I’m Mario, a 22 year old medical physicist in training from London. This will hopefully become a balanced outlet for me. I’ve created this space for 4 main reasons:
A song of introspection and engagement
I journaled privately for a year or two, scribbling unsanitised nothings in my little Moleskine notebooks. This was indeed an unathletic way to let off steam and take my anger out on something that didn’t have its own feelings. Despite the positives, journalling didn’t teach me much past a point. Writing without purpose is hollow in isolation, not meaning much to others.
Besides these notebooks which I hid in plain site on my bookshelf, my twitter is where the majority of my thoughts are dumped, with the added caveat that whatever I wrote was to be read by other people. Whether they be strangers, friends or somewhere in-between, this exposure is something I enjoy. I love a conversation, be it trolling, shitposting, or an earnest discussion.
And here we are to blend these together, much like ice and fire, a song of introspection and engagement.
Digital legacy - leaving a trace
We now have the gift/curse of leaving a digital trail of anything and everything that we’ve put online. From embarrassing old Facebook posts to Reddit ratios from a forgotten time, for better or for worse we all have an archived presence on the inter webs.
Having already left my own stain on the digital universe so far, I’m looking to put out some more positive content to be remembered by. After I’m dead and gone the world will still be able to read my South Park S24 review, what a thought.
I’ve always liked the idea of building two separate libraries in my life, one with books I’ve read and one with my own work. The latter will be mostly digital of course, sidestepping a potential Alexandrian catastrophe (or I lose them).
Writing for the love of writing
It’s a future goal of mine to write a novel, but in my daily life I write out numbers more than words, leaving me out of practice when putting together a coherent piece of writing. What better way to learn how to form narrative than short pieces of writing on things that interest me?
Pursuit of knowledge
Producing accurate, interesting articles requires a fair bit of research, just another reason to look deeper into subjects that pique my interest. Nuggets of knowledge can be as little as a Google search.
What will I write about?
I love to look deeper into media. Starting with a silly sounding statement like ‘Succession consists of a blend of Shakespearean and Bible stories‘ and breaking it down so that it’s believable is the sort of magic I wish to create.
I also enjoy philosophical and political discourse, here my opinions will pollute your LCD screen.
I hope to occasionally give insight into areas surrounding my life and work, as that’s what I spend most of my time thinking about. Subjects around physics and technology are sure to pop up.
